Baby name hypenation. Who's last name goes first - father or mother? both names are of irish decent.?

I just had a baby last friday, Keagan Lee - and we are wanting to send out announcements. We are an unmarried couple, and at this point we arent planning on getting married - we both want her to have our last name. We are both of Irish decent, and so is her name Keagan. But we arent sure how the hypenation works. Does the fathers last name go first, or second? How does a hypenated last name work when she gets married?

Usually it's the mother's name that goes first, but I know a few people who have their names the other way round. Choose whichever sounds better. If she gets married, it'll be up to her what she wants to do with her name.
Reply:When a woman gets married and wants to keep her maiden name or hyphenate her name the maiden name will come first then her husbands name would follow. So the baby would have her mothers name first and then the fathers name.

Good Luck!

Oh and Congratulations, I love the name!
Reply:My kids have hyphenated last names. Its the mothers name, then the fathers.

But if you want to do it fathers name then mothers, go ahead. ITs your choice.
Reply:You being the father you name should go last.
Reply:Usually it's mother-father. When she gets married, she could either keep the hyphenated name as a middle name and take his as a last name, drop the hyphenated name and just take his as a last name, go with all three names as a last name, or not take his last name at all.
Reply:normally is would be the mothers name then the fathers last name as the tradition was that the son would carry on the surname of his forefathers.

nowadays it can be however you like it, if it sounds better the other way then do that. when she gets married she would drop the whole hyphenated name i.e. mother and father and take upon her husbands name unless she wishes to keep her maiden name in which she would then have 3 surnames, i.e mother father then husband.
Reply:Aw, congrats! Keagan Lee is such an awesome name, especially for a girl!

Anyway, I don't think there are really any set rules for hyphenation. Most times, I think the father's name ends up going first, but it really doesn't matter. When/if she chooses to get married, she can keep/drop either surname. Or she could keep the whole thing altogether and not use her husband's. It's really her choice.

PS oops, I guess I was wrong about the father-mother order - sorry lol.
Reply:I don't think it matters which one goes first. Just choose whatever sounds better.
