Name the drink. guiness or irish stout with a hot poker inserted?

Hot Toddies or Hot Totties. Hot toddies, simple mixtures of hot water, sugar, and a single spirit such as whiskey, rum, brandy, and even gin, are remembered by many as old-fashioned cold remedies. While it was the heat, not the spirit, that seemed to make you feel better, toddies are one of those classic comforts we are loath to abandon even today.

Many hot drinks use coffee as their base, laced with either whiskey, rum, brandy, or liqueurs, or a combination of several of these. However, virtually any heated beverage can make a delightful drink, from hot chocolate, tea, cider, steamed milk, and even orange juice to the standards of liquor, ales, wines and spirits.

Q~

Name the drink. guiness or irish stout with a hot poker inserted?
I don't understand the question.
Reply:I believe you are talking about a Mulled Stout. But usually 2 tbsp of sugar is mixed in too.

Is this a good Irish spelling for the name "Karen"--CARYN?

There is no letter Y in the Irish language so you couldn't call 'Caryn' an Irish spelling. The nearest translation of Karen to Irish is spelt 'Caireann'.

Is this a good Irish spelling for the name "Karen"--CARYN?
Karen and it's variants like Caryn are of Greek origin and means 'Pure'.

These are some Irish names that sound kind of close to Karen (I think) and the names meaning.

Caraid - Friend.

Farren - The land.

Keara - The name of a saint.

Kera - Dusky; dark.

Morrin - Long haired.

Tara - Where the kings met.

Is the last name McCready Scottish or Irish?

I found this for you.

Surname: Mccready

Recorded in many forms as shown below, this is an early Irish surname. It originates either from the pre 10th century Gaelic "Mac Conriada", with the interesting translation of the son of the trained hound, or possibly from "Mac Riada", meaning the son of the expert one. Traditionally, Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, revered elders, or some illustrious warrior, and are usually prefixed by "O", male descendant of, or "Mac", denoting "son of". The clans belonged to the province of Ulster, and were erenagh families in the barony of Raphoe, Co. Donegal, which implies that they held church property, and maintained the priest from generation to generation. The modern spellings include MacCready, McCreedy, McReedy, McGready, MacAredy, and short forms such as Crady, Craddy, Cready, Credey and others, is widespread in the three counties of Donegal, Derry and Antrim. Examples of recordings include Patrick Craddy at Bagenalstown, County Carlow, on September 14th 1838, John Brown McCready at Aghadowery, Co. Derry, on May 14th 1864 whilst Monsignor Charles MacCready, was rector of the church of the Holy Cross, in New York, in 1890. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Father Donogh MacReidy (also called MacCreedy). This was dated 1608, in the "Records of the Deans and Martyrs of Coleraine", Co. Derry, during the reign of King James 1 of England and V1 of Scotland, 1603 - 1625. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Hope this helps.

Is the last name McCready Scottish or Irish?
Mcready is Irish in origin (Black ) but found in Scotland in Ayrshire . Variations include MacReadie - MacCreddie . Family came to Scotland in 1720 and Andrew was Provost of Stranraer .

Reply:McVaney is not Scottish but similar Scots names are McVean and McBean . Erroneous to assume Mc is Irish . The form used in Victorian writings in Scotland was usually M' eg M'Donald . Many people tracing their roots find the spellings vary between both Mc and Mac . Both forms found in 100% Scots genealogical ancestry !
Reply:The previous contributor is right about "O"-it does mean from, but "Mc" is son of, it comes from the irish "mac".

Reply:Niamh and Roisin (there's a fada on the last 'i' but my keyboard doesn't do them.)

In Irish myth Niamh was a fairy woman who took the warrior Oisin to Tir nan Og,land of the Ever Young.

Roisin would translate into Rosaleen or similar in English. It is known through 'Dark Rosaleen',the poem by James Clarence Mangan, and is sometimes thought to be synonymous with Ireland itself.

The last name 'Bass', is it originally Irish, English, Scottish, or what?

This famous surname is both English and occasionally, Scottish. In the first instance it may have Olde English pre 7th century origins, or it maybe French, and as such was introduced by the Normans after the 1066 Invasion. Taking the latter first as this is the most satisfactory explanation, the derivation is from the French word 'basse' meaning somebody who was both broad and thickset. This word itself is a development of the Latin "bassus", meaning wide, as opposed to tall. As such it was a descriptive nickname, ostensibly for somebody of that description, but given the sardonic humour of the Middle ages, quite possibly the reverse! The second possibility is that the surname is a metonymic occupational name for a fishseller, as with the surname 'Herring'. Medieval job descriptions were generally specific, although it is difficult to imagine that people lived by selling or catching only one type of fish. However if this was the case the derivation is from the Olde English pre 7th Century "baes", meaning bass. Lastly, if Scottish the name may be locational from a place called Bass in the Grampian region of Scotland. In this case the place name derives from the Gaelic word "bathais", meaning front or forehead. Early examples of the name recording include Osbert Bars in the pipe rolls of Gloucester in 1205, whilst Andrew de Bas of Aberdeen was a juror there in the year 1206. A notable namebearer, listed in the "Dictionary of National Biography", was Michael Thomas Bass (1799 - 1884), a brewer, who was an active social reformer, and M.P. for Derby. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Aelizia Bass, which was dated 1180, in the "Pipe Rolls of Warwickshire", during the reign of King Henry 11, known as "The church builder", 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

English: from Old French bas(se) 鈥榣ow鈥? 鈥榮hort鈥?(Latin bassus 鈥榯hickset鈥? see Basso), either a descriptive nickname for a short person or a status name meaning 鈥榦f humble origin鈥? not necessarily with derogatory connotations.

English: in some instances, from Middle English bace 鈥榖ass鈥?(the fish), hence a nickname for a person supposedly resembling this fish, or a metonymic occupational name for a fish seller or fisherman.

Scottish: habitational name from a place in Aberdeenshire, of uncertain origin.

Jewish (Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name for a maker or player of bass viols, from Polish, Ukrainian, and Yiddish bas 鈥榖ass viol鈥?

German: see Basse.

Question about Irish family last name?

My Grandma and I where talking this week about her genealogy project. She was wondering if the Irish last name Carruthers is pronounced as Cathers.ThanksJN

Question about Irish family last name?
Scottish: habitational name from a place near Ecclefechan in Dumfries, locally pronounced 鈥榢ridders鈥? The name is first recorded in 1334 in the form Carrothres, and then more clearly in c.1350 as Caer Ruther, and derives from British caer 鈥榝ort鈥?+ a personal name.

I have never heard it pronounced any other way than how it is spelled.
Reply:Carruthers is a Scottish name from the lands of Carruthers in parish of Middlebie in Dumfriesshire . Although true " Doon hammers " to quote a local idiom , some of the Carruthers probably went over to Ireland as " Planters " - what our colonial cousins usually refer to as " Scots Irish . " Black ( who was a Yank !! ) wrote in his master piece " The Surnames of Scotland " ( New York Public Library : 1946 ) that in local speech ( Dumfriesshire ) the named was pronounced " Cridders ".

If Irish Have Blood Of Kings - Name One In Vein?

When blood talks I'll listen.

Please pardon my pun.

If Irish Have Blood Of Kings - Name One In Vein?
Yeah, same thing about us Welsh having the blood of Princes. Probably just a load of cobblers in the case of myself, beause all I know is there is a long line of disrespecful common soldiers and miners and lesser riff-raff in my Welsh ancestry.

anyway, this next clip explains everything about being Welsh.

Reply:It's hard not to have the 'blood of kings' when you're Irish, since the island used to be divided into so many tiny kingdom... virtually any Irish clan that left a family name used to be royal... if only over an area smaller than a modern county and for a couple generations. So if every Irishman isn't propely descended from a king, you can be pretty sure that some of his ancestors used to be some king's cousins or nephews.

Then, there are the kings that history remembers, like Brian Boru (O'Brien), or Neill Naoigille (O'Neill, O'Connell, and virtually all nobility from Ulster) ...
Reply:OK. The jugular.

But here is my theory since a lot of my ancestry is Irish (also English) Ireland was a small country and before the British took over, I'm not sure when that was; Ireland was divided up into little kingdoms or whatever. There was probably a lot of intermarriage or inter-whatever and many of the people in an area may have been related to a local king or duke or whatever.

I'm just guessing that is why people might say we have the "blood of kings" Frankly, I've never really heard that. I've only heard I had the "Blood" of potato farmers. Nice to know I had some nobility in my background!
Reply:I do not think they should boast over much about that because it gives room to call them a lot of ba-tards. On the whole i like the Irish too much to want to call them that
Reply:Wow-it must be really hard to get a transfusion.

Reply:It will be pronounced differently from region to region, due to our ever changing dialect as you move up the country. It is pronounced Far-rin. When said quickly by an Irish person will often sound like Farn. Know lots of people with this name as a surname but never heard it as a first name. It's a lovely choice of name though.

How Irish Is The Name...?

Ciara?

Is it REALLY popular, or is it semi-popular, or not well known at all in Ireland?

How Irish Is The Name...?
Yeah it's pretty popular, just to think off the top of my head i know 5 Ciara's !!!

Nice name.
Reply:I've heard it often. Where do you live in the US? Just like Colm and Conan, it's a regular name in Irish neighborhoods due to Irish parents.

The US doesn't pronounce all the C's in names like K's as the Irish do, so that's where they go wrong with the pronunciation. It's like mispronouncing Jesus as Gee-sus rather than Hay-zeus in a latino neighborhood, which is common mistake non Spanish speakers make.
Reply:Ciara pronounced with a K sound, not an S sound, this is Irish. It's been a reasonably popular name for decades, and is the female form of the name Ciaran.
Reply:It is semi-popular, more-so in the last 25 years or so. I know alot of Ciaras who range in ages from 2-24. It's never a top 10 name in Ireland, but I'd say in the top 200 or so...
Reply:I visit schools frequently on business. Every class has at least one Ciara, and often more than one. So it is a popular name.
Reply:It's pretty common. I know four or five Ciaras. By the way, it's pronounced the same as Keira Knightley, rather than with a soft C.
Reply:It's a pretty popular name here, sure I have 2 cousin Ciara's, And I know a few as well.
Reply:it is very popular, I know 5, without even thinking too hard about it.

How do you no if you have an irish last name if it dosent start with Mc Mac or O?

Hi i wanted to no how do you tell if you have an irish last name if it does not start with Mac Mc or O . Like hogan or Carney? Are the ones with the last name that start with Mac Mc or O more irish or does it mean something when it does or does not have it?

How do you no if you have an irish last name if it dosent start with Mc Mac or O?
Here is a list of Irish family names.
Reply:Trace your paternal ancestors. Sooner or later you'll come to the immigrant ancestor - the one who came to the USA on a ship, tired, huddled and yearning to be free. (Free of the English, at least. He may have wanted to keep his wife.) Look at his birthplace. If it is Ireland, you are Irish. If not, you are not.
Reply:All Irish names have the Irish (or Gaelic, if you like) version and the anglicised version. The Irish version is the actual name, and can have several different versions in English. All Irish (Gaelic) names have either 脫 or Mac in them, but not all the anglicisations retain these. For example, the Irish name 脫 Cearnaigh has as its English versions: Kearney, O'Kearney, or Carney. Or, as another example, the name Mac Aodha has the English versions: Hughes, Hewson, McKay, McKee and McCoy.

The only way you'll know for definite where your ancestors came from is to research them.
Reply:I googled "Irish surnames" and found this site. I do believe it will be a help to you.

I am part Irish, part Welsh, part Scottish, etc., etc., so it is of interest to me also.

Reply:Some persons down the line have dropped the Mac, Mc, Fitz and O. Mac, Mc and Fitz mean son of. O means descendant of or like I have seen stated grandson of. Many Irish names don't have those prefixes. A priest once said a lot of people dropped them to disguise their names over the centuries when they were fighting for Irish independence.
Reply:Research can tell you if you have an Irish name. We have Irish in our line, but not one "Mac" "Mc" or "O."
Reply:Mac and O simply indicate 'son of'....So MacHenry was the son of Henry. There are thousands of Irish names without an Mac, Mc or O. In the days before surnames (last names), people were often referred to by their trade, hence names like Fletcher (makes arrows) or Baker (the village baker).

the second song might be "and the band played waltzing matilda". i have a recording by the three irish tenors. it details a young australian being shipped off to gallipoli in the first world war who loses his legs when a shell exploded close to him. it ends as he describes the parades held for the veterans of the australian services each year, in which he cannot march, as he is an amputee.

What do you think of the Irish girls name...?

Bévin

It's original form is Béibhinn. Both are pronounced "BAY vin." I would be keeping the é in Bévin, because I fear "Bevin" would end up being called "BEH vin."

What do you think of the Irish girls name...?
Hey Isobel!

I absolutely love the name Beibhinn, just the way it is. I asked my sister, who is a teacher, what she thought . She said it would actually be easier to remember the correct pronunciation with the authentic spelling. That spelled Bevin she would have a pronunciation already in mind. BEV - in.

With the Irish spelling she would draw a blank. So when the name was pronounced for her, BAY-vin, it would be the only she would see it. She wouldn't have to be told twice how to say it.

This is such a gorgeous name. If it were me , if I didn't think I could make it work with the original spelling, I would use it in the middle.

Charlotte Beibhinn

Rosamund Beibhinn

Miriam Beibhinn

It certainly is interesting in the middle.
Reply:i think it is a bit...not sure about it, i think bevin might be pronounced how you think it might be which would be bad

personally i think it is not pretty enough but i love the name bay by itself
Reply:I'm not to keen on it. It's not bad, I just don't like it. I would spell it the original way which is Béibhinn just because I hate misspellings and different spellings.
Reply:Bévin - I like the look of the spelling much more than Béibhinn.. the only thing is it will probably be pronounced bev-in not bay-vin by others.
Reply:I like it, it's different, still easy to say and spell

I like Bevin, that's the girl spelling, right

Reply:I knew a Bevin, I thought it was a cute name. I'd never heard it any other time, she was perky and fun!!
Reply:It's interesting, but it doesn't appeal to me.
Reply:It is cool and different to my eyes.

Is the last name Dooley irish?

This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name,

Dooley

Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic 脫 Dubhlaoich 鈥榙escendant of Dubhlaoch鈥? a personal name composed of the elements dubh 鈥榖lack鈥?(see Duff) + laoch 鈥榗hampion鈥? 鈥榟ero鈥?

Is the last name Dooley irish?
Yes, it is. It's a variation of the name Dowley.
Reply:In around 1960, in St Louis there was a well known doctor named Dooley. He probably graduated from St. Louis U.. He opened a medical organization in Cambodia or Thailand. He was a good fried of Jack Parr who had the tonight show before Johnny Carson and had D. Dooley on the late show quite often I guess to give the audience an opportunity to gain respect for what he was doing and I guess to help gain funds for his hospital. Unfortunately he died very young from spine cancer and id buried in Calvary cemetery in St Louis, not far from General Sherman. Don't know what this has to do with your question, but I am sure he was Irish.
Reply:Yeah come from county clare in Ireland and there are Dooley's all over the place. I dont speak Irish to well but I think its like the Irish version of handsome du(u with a line ove it)il - duil.

My nanna was from good Irish stock (O'Connor's), and her name was Aileen, which I've always liked (but she didn't. She went by Patricia instead lol). Kiana is an Irish name my cousin picked out for his daughter (he also took on the O'Connor, so Kiana O'Connor sounds pretty Irish =).

Bryn is an Irish boy's name I like too!

My all time faves out of your list are the first two girls' names however.

Whatever you go with, good luck!

Aiden and Murphy are boy's name

Rowan is probably a boys name, but is REALLY common as a girl's name right now. (Madison could be a good boy's name, if it wasn't so feminine now...)
Reply:I have always liked Maeve and I like Reilley,

For the boy, I like Rowan better, but Rowan Michael without the Burt (if that is an option!)

For the girl, is Moira taken? or Regan? I love those 2 names also.

Reply:i love the name Rowan

even if you use it for a girls name too

for a girl i would pick:

Rowan Michelle

or

Aeryn Elizabeth

or

Rowan Ailey

and for a boy

i would do Rowan Burt-Micheal
Reply:Aiden Hailey for a girl and Ronan William for a boy. My niece's name is going to be Rowan. I don't like Rowan on a boy, but that's just my opinion.

I had a teacher in 7th grade with the last name Ronan...
Reply:I LOVE Aeryn Elizabeth. That great spelling of Aeryn (I hate the traditional spelling). I also like Cassidy Anne. And I like Maeve too, but not with any of those as middle names.

Reply:For a girl, I loved the Irish name Keana. I believe it means beautiful. Out of these ones though I would probably choose Aeryn Mae.
Reply:I'm irish and I'm naming my 2nd baby if its a girl Cassidy!

Is the name Conway Irish?

I just answered your Q. on Thompson.

Here; use this for all your surname needs.

Is the name Conway Irish?
Check out the English. Try rivers and boat people on the Thames. You're there! A few criminals that tried to feed their families by stealing and ended up in Australia! Check out the manifests of convict ships. Some Conways came from Liverpool! You have great ancestry. There's no way like a Conway!

Was the drug's name Bufferin an insult for irish?

Was the drug's name Bufferin an insult for irish?
I can't even imagine how you arrived at that hypothesis.

Bufferin is a combination of two words: buffered and aspirin, thus Bufferin.
Reply:Yes I heard it long time ago and it was an insult in the sense like silly, dumb, stupid and slow. But it is long gone. Times are changing. The little older Australians called us, the new ones "wogs" and its also gone with the wind.
Reply:Never heard of that one- could be one of those folklore things

Reply:I found a *great* site for you! It's called Baby Names, and it has absolutely everything you could want on there! You can find names by origin, alphabetically, most popular and even chart a name to see how popular it is now and dating back to the 1920's or something like that!

Anyway I looked up Irish origin names, and here's the link! You can switch to Scottish if you want!
Reply:Are you looking for a common Irish name that sort of sounds American? Or are you looking for a traditional Gaelic (of Irish origin) name? My uncle is 100% Irish and he and my aunt chose to give their children Gaelic names. Their daughter's name is Niamh (pronounced NEE-VE) and their son's name is Ciaran (pronounced KIR-AN). Some popular names that are pretty "normal" American names are:

Patricia

Kira

Catherine/Katherine

Eileen

Bridget

Cassidy

Briana

Kiley

Kelly

Logan

Maureen

Reagan

Riley

Rory

Ryan

Shannon

Sheila

Some Gaelic names that are a little more unpopular in the U.S. are:

Aislin (means: vision, dream)

Eavan (means: beautiful radiance)

Faylinn (means: a graceful woman)

Keely (means: beautiful)

Rosaleen (means: little rose)

Teagan (means: little poet)

Tierney (means: lord)

Reply:My personal favorite-Aibhilin. (Aab-hil-een) or (Aab-hil-iin) it means 'wished-for' or 'longed for child'

Is the last name higgins, irish or german?
The best way I know for you to learn about your roots is to:

Build your family tree on line.

You can use a paid site like:

http://www.ancestry.com/

OR You can do this for free on:

http://www.tribalpages.com/

Start with yourself, and then attach living family members.

Find out all you can about you family from living members, then attach it to your tree.

Now it is time to look for historical records and attach the info to your tree:

It is ALL about census records, and other historical records!

You might get lucky and others may have done some work on your family tree. Google family members names i.e. "Mary Smith" + "family tree"

Free sites:

http://www.searchforancestors.com/

http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

http://www.usgenweb.com/

http://www.census.gov/

http://www.rootsweb.com/

http://www.ukgenweb.com/

http://www.archives.gov/

http://www.familysearch.org/

http://www.accessgenealogy.com/

http://www.cyndislist.com/

http://www.findagrave.com/

Genealogy message board:

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx...

http://boards.ancestry.com/

http://www.gensource.com/common/search.c...

http://www.genealogyforum.com/messages/

http://www.progenealogists.com/messagebo...

http://messageboards.aol.com/aol/en_us/b...

http://boards.rootsweb.com/

ECT.

The time may come when you want more information than you can find for free. When this happens you can back up your "tribalpage" tree to your computer on a "GEDCOM" file

you can then go to (I think it is the best subscription site)

http://www.ancestry.com/

Upload your "GEDCOM" file

and start to work!

You might need to make a few adjustments to your tree to make it look better.

Reply:Hey,

wow this is crazy, my last name is Higgins, and I'm german and irish.

I'm almost positive it's irish, it was my grandfathers last name, and he was 100% irish. Also, when I went to Ireland I found that the last name Higgins is very popular there. Hope that helps. As for Zentz it is German, it comes from Vinzentz, meaning vincent in german =]
Reply:I would say Higgins is Irish and Zentz is German
Reply:Higgins = Irish Family motto: "Faithful and True"

Zentz = German
