Is the name McGowan, Irish or Scottish and how could I go about looking up my ancestors?

MacGowen means 'Son of the smith' and is actually two speerate clans , an irish and a scottish one. THe webpage below gives some information

Reply:It's Irish. Generally speaking, Irish is Mc.Scottish is Mac.Both mean 'Son of',so McGowan is the son of Gowan.
