Unfortunately, depending on where you live i suppose, nothing appealed to us for a first name.
So, we picked a middle name, we went with Aislinn. it's irish and it means dream.
We pronounce it AIS-LINN. My sister-in-law used to be a nanny in England and said that that name is really pronounced ASH-LINN, but we fell in love with it pronounced the first way.
And our two year old sounds adorable when she says her full name!!! :)

Is the name"Hare" irish english or scottish?
It could be both, if you consider that many Scots people had their origin in Ireland.
Name a great irish or english pop/rock group...?
Preferably 30's and younger...
Name a great irish or english pop/rock group...?
The Answer
Reply:The best Irish rock band, though no longer together, is The Pogues. They are absolutely raucous; the lead singer, Shane MacGowan, eventually got kicked out because of his alcoholism and outrageous behavior, but The Pogues had a great unmistakably Irish rockin' sound with great lyrics. They started in 1982, and after MacGowan left the band in 1991, they continued with Joe Strummer (from the Clash, of course) and later Spider Stacy on vocals before breaking up in 1996. The Pogues got back together again in 2001, but they have yet to record any new music.
(And BTW, I'm not '30 or younger' by a long stretch...)

Is the name "Wahl" of Irish descent?
It could be Irish, but it would only be a reasonable idea if someone had played with the spelling through the years (like Sen John Kerry who is actually of Czechoslovakian Jewish background and his grandfather picked the name Kerry to sound more like his neighbors in Boston.)
Everyone forgets that names don't come from places, people do. People carry their names with them wherever they go. People also change their names when circumstances warrant. I can't say that the spelling Wahl is Irish, but I do believe there can be people with the name Wahl who are Irish. The question is then "how did they get that name?"
Maybe it was originally spelled Wall (which could well be Irish) and someone changed one letter because of issues with not getting mail on their route because of confusion with other families of the same name. Happened often in the last 120 years.
Another possibility is that someone name Wahl who was German left that country 300 years ago and resettled in Ireland, but kept their German spelling for a few generations. Then their descendents brought it to another country. They were Irish and rightly told others that they were Irish. Maybe their name has German roots, but at that point it's an Irish name because it belongs to an Irishman.
The only way to know where your "name came from" is to find the people who brought it here using good research to find out from whence they came...and from whence their ancestors came...
Is the name "Wahl" of Irish descent?
I believe German. I have always known it to be German.
Reply:Hey Jeff,
Swyrich.com says it is German and Swedish.
German:
Spelling variations of this family name include: Wahle, Wahlen, Wahler, Wahls, Wahlers, Waler and many more.
First found in Oldenburg, where the name emerged in mediaeval times as one of the prominent families of these regions.
Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Johann Caspar Wahl, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1754; many others followed in 1842; 1844; 1855; 1871; and 1898. Melchior Wahl came with his wife Anna Clara and their two children to Philadelphia in 1808.
Swedish: No elaboration available there.
-------------------
When I find this sort of split on a name, it is usually true that they are not related. DNA Projects can prove that fact. DNA Projects will want you to have done as much of your Family Tree for that surname as possible also.
Family Search has 463 entries on the name Wahl with the exact search on. Not many entries in Ireland, but there are everywhere else in the world.
The direct answer to your question is : the name Wahl is Not Irish

Is the name O'Henry Irish or Scottish?
Hi I'm trying to find out if my family is Irish or Scottish... My moms last name(b4 my dad of course) started out as O'Henry but over time the O got dropped and now its just Henry and we all thought it was Irish but some one Irish told my mom that sounds more like a scottish name so we want to know if were Irish or not!?
Is the name O'Henry Irish or Scottish?
No it's definately Irish........The "O" in a name means 'the son of'. For example: Patrick O' Connell strictly means Patrick the son of Connell in Irish.
The same applies in Scottish names but 'Mac' or 'Mc' is used instead. So Hamish Mc Donnell strictly means Hamish the son of Donnell.
Although both are diluted now in both countrys but this is where the originate from.
Reply:From searching in google, I found a reference to "The Book of Ulster Surnames" by Robert Bell that suggests O'Henry is probably from the Irish name 脫 hInneirghe. It is true that "O" is found in Irish names. But the only way to find out for sure where your ancestors were from is to research them.
Here are more references to the name 脫 hInneirghe: http://homepage.eircom.net/~kthomas/name... (look under "Henry")
http://www.ulsterclans.org/baronies.html (in the very last paragraph)
http://www.goireland.com/genealogy/famil...
Reply:The O prefix in Irish names means descendant of whereas Mac, Mc or Fitz means son of. Now whether O'Henry is of gaelic origin, I don't know. Some English immigrated to Ireland and took up Irish customs. Actually I have some O'Dell in my family which isn't really of Gaelic origin even though there were O'Dells in Ireland. They intermmaried with the native Irish and became Irish themselves.

Having said that the Scots and the Irish are very similar in lots of ways as the word "Scot" is a very old name for "bandit". You see the Scots originally came from Ireland raiding the Scottish coastline

Is Shaquille O'neal irish?I've never heard of a black irish but his last name is irish.?
No he is not Irish though his adoptive father, whom his mother married shortly after his birth, may have had Irish roots. Shaquille's biological father's name was Toney
"Born on March 6, 1972, in a poor area of Newark as Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal, Shaq's childhood was spent with his parents, Lucille and Philip O'Neal."
"O'Neal, born in Newark, New Jersey, was named "Shaquille Rashaun" by his biological father, Joseph Toney."
Is Shaquille O'neal irish?I've never heard of a black irish but his last name is irish.?
Probably not...Most likely his ancestors were slaves of an Irishman and adopted the surname.
Reply:Former WBC Jr. Lightweight boxing Champion of the world "Irish" Leroy Haley was also a black dude, go figure!
Reply:Many turn of the century Americans doubted that Irish people were really of the same race. Though it seems perfectly clear to us that Irish people are white, it seemed less clear to our ancestors. Irish immigrants and free African Americans took many of the same jobs, and experienced similar degrees of predjudice. In America in the 1840s, an immigrant worker might be seen not as "white" but Irish. The prevalence of Irish surnames among African Americans (Shaquille O'Neal, for example) reflects to some extent the common situation African and irish Americans found themselves in. This image, from Harper's Weekly in 1871, reflects some of that ambiguity as well. The figure, which\ depicts Irish American rioters conforms to both Irish and black stereotypes--oversize feet, gangly, rubbery limbs, and a propensity to violence. A recent history of the Irish in America by Noel Ignatiev explains How the Irish Became White. His answer is that Irish Americans embraced racism. They adopted racial predjudice, in other words, so they would have someone to step on in their rise to economic and social assimilation.
But even as "whites," the Irish remained suspect. The second image, drawn by the the famous political cartoonist Thomas Nast for Harper's Weekly in 1876, manages to link both Irish and African Americans in "ignorance." One is white and one *****, but they are equals--equally grotesque in appearance, equally dangerous to the republic. Most immigrant groups have faced some form of bigotry or other. Most have also found a great deal of opportunity and embraced the "American Dream." Still, just how far can self making go?

Reply:Many african-americans have irish and scottish surnames, either because they ARE irish and scottish (there are plenty of black people in Great Britan), or because irish and scottish imigrants were plentiful in the american south prior to the civil war and the abolishment of slavery. Slave families often took their "owner's" name as their own when they were freed.

Irish Dancers! Does anyone know the name of that pretty slip jig that is only a harp?
I'm not sure of the name but my teacher uses it all the time and he's not sure of the name.
I'm not quite sure how to describe it- the only thing I can really tell you is that it's only a harp playing, and that it's, as my friend says, "very light and tinkly" :P
Irish Dancers! Does anyone know the name of that pretty slip jig that is only a harp?
Not enough information. I play Irish harp, and I play numerous slip jigs. Some of the more common slip jigs are "The Butterfly", "The Foxhunter's Jig", "A Fig for a Kiss", "Drops of Brandy" and "The Snowy Path"; I wouldn't be surprised if your teacher's recording is one of those, just because they're commonly performed tunes. Those are all in my harp repertoire. But without hearing the tune, I couldn't name it.
Do you have any Irish musicians in your community? Your best bet is to ask one of them to listen to your teacher's recording, and I expect he or she will be able to identify it immediately.
Reply:Try posting your question at www.diddlyi.com - it is a forum for Irish Dancers and Musicians. I think I have heard the tune you are talking about, but only once and don't know anything about it. Good Luck!

Can you name this Irish film?
It's a modern kitchen-sink drama, in an Irish, urban setting where horses are kept %26amp; seen on the streets. The film follows a youth who has been released from a detention center/prison. I believe it was made around 2000, can anyone hazard a guess of the title given this vague description?
Can you name this Irish film?
I know the film you are thinking of but like you cannot remember the title i just stumbled across it on sky movies years ago. I can remember someone trying to steal his horse and alot of it being around a pub and maybe he got a girl pregnant... So long ago i might be mistaking it for something else but i do know the one you mean! Sorry i know i'm not much help!
Reply:It sounds like Intermission, was Colin Farrell in it? And Colm Meaney. And does Colin Farrell beat up a girl and rob her cashtill in the start of the film? Then it is Intermission.

INTO THE WEST...
PLOT SUMMARY..
Grandpa Ward gives a horse he found to his grandchildren, who keep it in their tower-block flat in Dublin. The horse is stolen from them, and the two young boys set out to find it and flee on it.
A gigantic white stallion appears mysteriously to a Traveller grandfather and his two grandsons in an Irish slum. Since, puzzlingly, the younger of the two boys is the only individual who can control the horse, ownership falls to him and his older brother by default. There being no place for the animal, they move him into the apartment of their alcoholic Traveller father. Police remove him and, in a shady deal, he ends up under control of a wealthy, underhanded horse breeder. The boys manage to retrieve him and escape on his back, but the stallion seems to have his own travelling agenda.
Reply:i think the film might be "wrapped", but i cant find any info on it to verify. sorry
Reply:At first I thought it might be a Roddy Doyle film...I saw it too and can't remember the name. Did a very scatty search and found "Into the West" (think they bring the horse into a council flat???).

What is the name for old irish writing?
The Irish name for it is Gaeilge. Irish (Gaeilge na h脡ireann), which is also known as Irish Gaelic or Gaelic, is closely related to Manx (Gaelg Vanninagh) and Scottish Gaelic (G脿idhlig na h-Alba). The Ulster dialect of Irish is particularly close to Scottish Gaelic.

Does anyone know someone with the name, Corbett. Can you tell me if it is Irish.?
I was born in Oklahoma, my father was born in Kansas. I was adopted and I would like to trace my tree back to our country of origin. I'm tired of just considering myself a mutt. Can anyone help me find myself?
Does anyone know someone with the name, Corbett. Can you tell me if it is Irish.?
Hey artgophknight,
Get your Birth Certificate. Get your adoption records! Is it your real father that was born in Kansas? You can request his Birth Certificate, find his Death Certificate, and research his family. These vital records give great information that can be used to trace backward in time. Your fathers place of death, birth all give clues. Birth Certificates give parents, his parents are your grandparents and their place of birth will be given in his Birth Certificate. Find all you can for vital records.
Check the web sites provided for assistance in getting Vital Records.
Provided below are several Corbett Family sites. They may or may not be immediately related. I bet half of them are distantly related. So, if you can go up the tree to your Corbett roots, you may find people that already know the Corbett line.
Don't forget that each generation has additional names besides the Corbett line! Those names and ancestors contributed to who you are - so they should be looked at too. I recommend finding and using FAMILY TREE MAKER software. This will help you track, map, document your Genealogy.
No one is a Mutt - things happen in life - you might be related to kings and queens.
Reply:Well, you've answered your own question, really. If you're wanting to trace your actual line, instead of the name line, you're out of luck, at least until 2067. All records are sealed for 100 years, in most cases. You can probably go get his birth certificate, though. You just have to prove you're his son. With the info you've provided, I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate. That would at least give you date and place of birth, and his parents' names. Go online to the site for the State he was born. They'll have a section for Vital Records, if it's anything like any other State site. It will tell you how to go about getting what you need. It may have a form to print out to get records. It usually does cost, but no more than $20, normally only $10.
But trying genealogy this close to present, is bloody near impossible, because of the whole privacy thing.
Reply:something Italian?
Reply:Google the name. There is much information out there, but you have provided little information from which to start. There appears to be a great deal of history from Oregon with the name Corbett.

Can anyone tell me the name of the famous traditional irish melody used in this song?
The tune is to the Irish traditional song "The Golden Jubilee" I couldn't find a site with a sound file but you will find the full lyrics at the site below.
First verse:
"Way down in the county Kerry, in a place they call Tralee
A fine old couple they lived there - Kate and Pat Magee
They were going to have a party on their Golden Jubilee

Thanks to all answerers!
Now Kate says she to Pat Magee come and listen here to me"

What is the name of the movie about an Irish musician that came out in 2007 I believe?
It was a movie about this basically pennyless guitar player in Dublin who lived with his father (?) who fixed appliances...he meets this foreign girl (German?) who plays piano and has a kid, and it's basically a story about them. They record a cd in it and everything.
Anybody remember the name of it?!

HOW TO SAY THiS NAME IN IRISH?
Stephanie - Stefanie
Stephanie is a french feminine form of the name stephen.
In irish , stephen is stiofan (shtee fawn ).
there is no feminine equivalent in irish, but you could make a modern one by adding in : stiofainin (shtee fawn eee) or maybe stifin ( shtee feen ) , although the second looks a little strange , and older irish form of steven is stiana ( shtee oh na ) you could use this as a base to form a feminine name : stiainin ( shtee uh neen )
Reply:There is no Irish equivalent of this name.
Reply:There is no Irish equivalent. If you use stiofainin as suggested it really means little stephen. Not all names translate.

What is the true Irish way to spell Connor? Also any good Irish baby BOY names that start with a "C" Thanks!?
The Irish version of the name is Conchubhar (I'm open to correction on the spelling). The most common way of spelling it in Ireland is Conor.

Other names begining with "c" are Ciar谩n, Cian, Colm, Cormac, Cillian and Cathal

The name Connor is an anglicised version of the true Irish name 'Conch煤r'. In Ireland the spelling 'Connor' is mostly used.
Other Irish male names starting with C can be found at the site below.
Reply:Conor is the correct form of spelling the name.
Also, try
1) Colm- means dove, and is Irish
2) Caelan- means slender lad, and is Irish
I personally love Colm!

Do you know the name of an Irish Gangster series on American TV?
The Black Donnelly`s. The series follows four young Roman Catholic Irish-American brothers in Hell's Kitchen and their involvement with organized crime. Although the show is set in the present day, it draws heavily upon Irish-American history and iconic themes.
On May 14, 2007, the series was officially canceled by NBC.
Do you know the name of an Irish Gangster series on American TV?
I know that 06-07 The Black Donnellys aired on NBC, right after Heroes, but I haven't watched much TV since so I don't know what happened to it. But it was being narrated by this guy who, presumably, was in prison, and there were four brothers, and one of them got beat up at the start of the series, if that helps you at all.

Please help us with our (Irish) baby's name!?
I love the name Kennedi for a little girl- the last name is Ryan. Any suggestions on a middle name that might feminize the first name a bit?
Also, if we have a baby boy, what do you think of the name Kyler or Keegan? Again, I'm unsure of middle names.
I liked Austin as a middle name but I don't think it fits with any of the first name I've picked out.
And, yes, we're Irish. ;-)
Thanks for your suggestions!

You're dad isn't full blooded. Since each of your parents contribute half of your blood line, from what you have said you are 1/2 Hispanic, 1/4 French and 1/4 Irish.
My dad is full blood french , irish . My mom is hispanic madien name is Rodruigez . What Iam I ?
There is no such thing as full blood anything.
If you trace your ancestry, you probably will find that a grandfather or great grandfather that came from France had a great great grandparent that came from one of the GErman states, Bohemia etc. There is no such thing as a pure nationality or a pure race.
I always feel that a person who says the are full blooded whatever sound like they are talking about their pedigree horse or dog.
The term "Duke's mixture" was used in my father's family as his mother was a Duke. We are proud kin of old Bull Durham.

you are one third french, one third irish, one third hispanic; so be proud of your heritage.

And in addition to the obvious irish, from her last name? i meant is she mulatto at all?
thanks for your answer. however, i was not confused about melissa mcintyre being irish. that's obvious from her last name. she looks to be mulatto. so my question really lies in is she black and irish, or is she mixed with any other ethnicities other than the obvious irish?
And in addition to the obvious irish, from her last name? i meant is she mulatto at all?
everyone is most likely mixed and sometimes the darker race shines through!!!
